In Memory of 100 Years Hans Bradtke

Hans Bradtke (* 1920; † 1997) actually planned on becoming an architect. After working different illustrator jobs, he started designing sheet music in 1947 for the music publisher just recently formed by Rolf Budde and Gerhard Froboess – this was his first musical touchpoint. Together with Gerhard Froboess he wrote his first ever “Schlager” hit in 1951 for Froboess’s daughter Cornelia, which was the well-known hit “Pack die Badehose ein”. This was only the start of his career as one of the most successful lyricists of German music history: His songs and evergreens are known to everyone – songs such as „Weiße Rosen aus Athen”, “Carnaby Street” or “Er hat ein knallrotes Gummiboot” have had a considerable impact on German pop culture until today. His German versions of songs by French singers such as France Gall (“Ein bisschen Goethe, ein bisschen Bonaparte”) or Joe Dassin (“Champs Elyseees) helped them having their musical breakthrough in Germany. His witty translations of international hits such as “Rote Lippen soll man küssen” or “Das kannst du mir nicht verbieten”, also played a central role in his overall glory. Huge international success was also not far, with legendary songs such as Nat King Coles „Those Lazy, Hazy, Crazy Days of Summer“ (“Du spielst ‘ne tolle Rolle”) or “Der Sommerwind” (“Summer Wind”), which Frank Sinatra sung as well and made it a huge banger in the states, as well as the well-known song “Kalkutta Liegt Am Ganges” (“Tivoli Melodie”), Hans Bradtke made a name for himself on an international level. Hans Bradtke’s story closely intertwines with the history of Rolf Budde Music Publishing and he remained faithful in his Edition Primus until his unfortunate death in 1997. A close friendship still deeply connects both families until today. Hans Bradtke’s biggest hits can be found here: Im Gedenken an 100 Jahre Hans Bradtke Hans Bradtke (* 1920; † 1997) wollte ursprünglich Architekt werden.
